The other day I went to Walmart to buy groceries. I wheeled my purchases out, put them in my car, stowed my cart in the parking lot cart rack and took off. Then I stopped to buy a Sonic burger & “O” rings, and when I went to pay I realized I’d left my purse in the cart (because I’d remembered seeing it there when I was loading up my car). Why would I NOT see it when I wheeled the cart over to the cart rack? So I asked Sonic to hold my food because I had to go back to Walmart & retrieve my purse.

I drove into the parking lot (15 minutes away from Sonic), and the cart guy was collecting carts from the rack where I’d put mine. “Did you find a purse in one of the carts?” I asked. He said no, there wasn’t a purse in any of them. My stomach dropped about 10 feet. I had my wallet, debit card, two other charge cards, driver’s license, Medicare (Kaiser) card, Starbucks card with $17.xx still left on it, library card, AAA card, Target debit card, Nordstrom debit card, iPhone, iPod, and a Bed, Bath & Beyond gift card, plus lipsticks, blah, blah, blah. In other words, my life was in there! (Not to mention, it was my all-time FAV purse.)

I went into Walmart AGAIN, and talked with customer service (no luck) and the woman there walked with me back outside where we checked the trashcans at both ends of the store. Nada. Then she asked if I wanted to talk to the Denver Policeman who was inside. Took me awhile to locate him, and of course he had no idea where it might be. I told him where I’d left it and when he asked for my date of birth I told him and then I added, “Do you think my age has anything to do with it?” He chuckled, which was nice since he was probably about 45 years old–and cute!

Then a Hispanic guy walked up to me with his 3-4 year old son while I was giving the policeman the rest of my information and asked, “Did you lose something?” I told him, “Yes, my purse.” He showed me a note that had been in the cart with someone else’s name (Shannon) and phone number on it. I recognized the piece of paper, because I’d thought about throwing it away when I retrieved my own shopping list, but decided to just leave it since it belonged to whoever used the cart before I had.

“I have it in my car,” he said, “and I have this piece of paper with your phone number on it so I could call you when I got home.” I told him I wasn’t Shannon and if he’d called Shannon she would have had no idea what he was talking about! So I walked out to his car with him and his son, and sure enough, there was my purse.

What are the odds that:
1. A good samaritan would find my purse instead of someone who really needed money,
2. That that same person would see and hear me 45 minutes later talking to a cop about my purse,
3. That he wouldn’t already have left with my purse thinking he had the phone number of the person the purse belonged to, and
4. That ANYONE could find a purse with all the contents intact after leaving it in a Walmart cart, outside in a cart rack?
5. That Sonic really DID save my food for me until I got back there, although they did pour me a fresh diet coke.

If that isn’t an out and out miracle, I don’t know what is! That’s when I realized I’d had a perfectly FABULOUS day!
Moral of the story: Never make assumptions. I almost didn’t stop to talk to the cop, because the negative voice in my head was say, “Really? You think you’re going to find your purse in a store like Walmart?” But then I reconsidered; I lead a charmed life–why WOULDN’T I find my purse in Walmart?

Thanks, Boni. I love having a place where I can celebrate my successes!

    Linda,

Your story gave me goosebumps! What a wonderful lesson for all of us. There is SO much help awaiting us, and SO much magic and many miracles to be had…when we allow them in. Just a tiny little bit of hope and faith on your part sure had big consequences, didn’t it? And kudos to you for overpowering the voice of your negative self and remembering you live a charmed life. Love it!
